TA-DA

TA-DA stands for Test Application for DeviceAtlas. Collecting data about device profiles is a complex task, in fact there are many variants and many tiny bits that might change depending on the device configuration, network configuration, etc. We think that a community approach similar to wikipedia is the best in this case. For this reason we have created a website that is freely accessible by any user of DeviceAtlas and allows users to run tests and provide data to DeviceAtlas.

The process is quite simple, you visit http://ta-da.mobi with your mobile device, login using your DeviceAtlas account, run the tests you want (we suggest to run them all, but some might prefer to focus on just a few to start) and click on the answers to be recorded. There are no right or wrong answers, in fact, what we want to know is what is happening on your device and this is why we tried to keep the tests atomic and the answers simple. Running all the tests should take about 10 or 15 minutes on slow networks. Test sessions may also be resumed, so you may go back, complete the tests you did not take or re-run tests you had already completed.

Every day we review the results stored and include them in DeviceAtlas. This way new values are stored against existing properties and compared to the values we already have in the database. Also, new devices can be added, in fact visiting TA-DA lets us automatically record the HTTP request headers and users can provide device details such as vendor and model name.

We think that the empirical approach is the best for device profiles as it allows us to collect a lot of information about the device, the browser and the network. The collective approach and the automatic tool will guarantee the quality of the results. The more data we can collect, the higher quality we will be able to reach, reducing the noise to the lowest level possible.

Tutorials are available to guide you through the process.
